Liminal's Organ Of Corti, which won PRS For Music Foundation's New Music Award, will be open to the public outside St Paul's Cathedral, London, 1–7 July. The four metre high sonic crystal recycles the environmental sound it's placed in, so everyday sonic matter is highlighted. The sculpture, named after the hearing organ in the inner ear, is large enough for the audience to move about inside it. This movement helps the participants to compose the found sounds and experience them in a different context from their usual source. Frances Crow, one half of Liminal, says they wanted to create an environment where the audience could "listen to themselves listen."
Organ Of Corti will later be placed in different locations in the Lake District, the Cotswalds and the Diglis Weir in Worcester, with accompanying artist talks and sound walks.
