Bacterial Orchestra

Hundreds of iPhones to join to create a musical organism in Uppsala, Sweden

It started off as a sound installation in 2006 but has now developed into a self-organising system of intelligent neural music. Olle Cornéer and Martin Lübcke are behind the Bacterial Orchestra which is due to perform this Saturday at the Volt Festival, Uppsala, Sweden. The original installation consisted of several audio cells. Every cell would 'listen' to its surroundings and picks up sounds, trying to play together in a musical way. The musical material came from the background noise, people talking or sounds played by other cells. Public Epidemic No 1 (2009) is a generation of the installation where each cell lives on an Apple iPhone and interacts with cells on other iPhones. Be part of a world wide sound pandemic.
