A composition by David Toop based on British conceptual artist John Latham's idea of "Flat Time" is being performed tomorrow by John Butcher, Aleks Kolkowski, Elaine Mitchener and Toop at London's Raven Row gallery. The piece – a visual score – was originally commissioned as part of the soundtrack to the online John Latham archive. A performance of Flat Time Sounding first took place in 2010 at London's Whitechapel Gallery.
Flat Time/Sounding is a score of texts and images for improvisation, based on Latham's Time-Base Theory, which attempts to change our understanding of reality to focus on time and events rather than space and objects. It also draws on Toop's 1976 London Zoo placement which focused on human and animal communication.
The event is free but booking is required, via firstname.lastname@example.org. London Raven Row, 13 December, 7pm, free.
