"A Suitable Teacher For Young Roller Canaries"
from forthcoming exhibit at The Center for PostNatural History, Pittsburg PA
Statement from Ian Nagoski:
"This is a nearly destroyed disc, acoustically recorded (through a
horn, rather than a microphone) and performed on a Water Organ,
recorded in Richmond Indiana in 1922 by the Star Furniture Company
(ie Gennett Records). Privately released by the International
Roller Canary Breeders Association of Louisville, Kentucky, it was
produced, the disc's label says, “as a suitable teacher for young
Roller Canaries”. Roller Canaries learn melody by tradition from
older teacher-birds.
The record was restored for a future exhibit on the subjects of
memory, tradition and human-bird interaction at the Center for
PostNatural History in Pittsburgh to be co-curated by myself and
the Center's founder Rich Pell."
