Artist statement:

Several years ago I became obsessed with a live recording of the song "Blue Sands" by the Chico Hamilton Quintet, especially Eric Dolphy's flute playing. The version performed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, documented in the film Jazz on a Hot Summer's Day, is an amazing piece of dark exotica with a sparse arrangement that heightens the tension of the composition. I've watched this video probably more than any other video on Youtube.

"Persuasive Barrier", the title track from my first full length as Three Legged Race, is basically my attempt to recreate the sound and atmosphere of this performance- the flute, guitar, and drums replaced with synthesizer. Not sure I quite hit the mark, but I'm happy with the results nonetheless.
