Artist statement:
"Arc of Light" is an overture celebrating the Chicago summer spirit and the rhythms of life inspired by the energy of the sun.
Black Earth Orchestra musicians on this track include: Nicole Mitchell - flute, composition, conducting; Mankwe Ndosi - vocals; David Young and Jamie Branch - trumpet; Renee Baker and Robert Fischer - viola; Tomeka Reid and Teddy Rankin Parker - cello; Anthony Davis and Craig Taborn - piano; Joshua Abrams and Nate McBride - bass; and Mike Reed and Chad Taylor - drums.
Nicole Mitchell is a creative flutist and composer whose music celebrates jazz and Afro-futurism. Among the first class of Doris Duke Artists (2012), Mitchell works to raise respect and integrity for the improvised flute, to contribute her innovative voice to the jazz legacy and to continue the work that the AACM has charted for decades. With contemporary ensembles of varying instrumentation and size (from solo to orchestra), Mitchell’s mission is to celebrate the power of endless possibility by “creating visionary worlds through music that bridge the familiar and the unknown.”
