Guitarist Andrew Smiley and drummer Kate Gentile have known each other for over a decade, playing gigs, sessions, practicing polyrhythms together, and playing in other peoples' bands together – including Will Mason’s Happy Place and David Crowell’s new band Clocks Or Clouds. Their compositionally likeminded approach to crafting the music on Flagrances captures the visceral nature of 1960s and 70s jazz and the power of outré rock forms. They also share a mutual love of basketball and ping pong.
