Originally conceived as a casual side-project in 2000, Portland, Oregon group Grails’ constituent members have each kept up an astonishing work rate, playing with M Ward, Jandek and Neurosis’s Steve Von Till, and producing Yellow Swans – never to the group’s detriment. “Tough Guy” comes from their tenth album Chalice Hymnal (2017), which continues their “rather radical study in tension and meditation, inhabiting a netherworld where virtually all earthly and otherworldly sounds are equally explored to reflect the disparate influences of its four members”.
