“In a world of abundance, the minimalist is king,” declares Cabaret Voltaire bassist/founder member Stephen Mallinder about Um Dada – his second solo record after Pow Wow/Pow Wow Plus (1982–85). His post-CV projects include the group Wrangler, and the immersive performance piece Cotton Panic with actor Jane Horrocks. Um Dada, continues Mallinder, is “about ‘play’ – cut and paste, lost words, twisted presets, voice collage, simple sounds – things that have been lost to technology’s current determinism”.
