Kayageum trio Hey String, wrote Clive Bell in The Wire 428, are part of a revolution among Korean traditional players who “take it as given that there are no limits to what they can play”. Formed in 2017, they sought to break the limitations of their zither-like instruments. “We want to make our own music,” Hey String’s Jihyun Park told Clive. “The kayageum is just a tool because we want to express our own feeling... We think that by putting our musical tastes together we will create something new.”
