CTM 2014: Rodion GA

March 2014

Mark Pilkington talks to Romanian musicians Rodion GA and Ion Dumitrescu about the rediscovery of his music, DIY tape maniuplations and recording techniques.

Rodion GA's music has remained all but unknown to most of the world, until its recent rediscovery and release by Strut. The group was in fact just one man, with a rotating cast of musicians, although his best known hit (performed on New Year's Eve TV in Romania) was a multitrack of his own playing. Only two Rodion GA tracks ever saw official release, both on Romanian state-run label Electrecord’s Formatti Rock Vol 5 compilation. The 'group' performed throughout the 80s and composed scores for the film Delta Space Mission and the Romanian National Opera, but the majority of their work remained suppressed, despite avoidance of explicitly political content and the overwhelming popularity of their radio-only singles.

The talk was recorded at the 2014 edition of CTM festival in Berlin. Strange Attractor's Mark Pilkington hosts.
