The Wire Salon: Electric Eden

August 2010

Listen to the August 2010 edition of The Wire's Salon

The Wire’s Editor-at-Large Rob Young discussing his history of folk, folk rock, psychedelia and the British imagination, Electric Eden: Unearthing Britain’s Visionary Music (published by Faber And Faber, 5 August 2010).

Loving this book, Rob. Half-way through - just finished the 'Fire' section on John Martyn. He, and Nick Drake were important voices for me as a young man in the early 90s, as was Mark Hollis and a whole sound of pastoral longing, of nostalgia, Romantic awe, loss, hope, nature. It has been wonderful to read such a thorough examination of that thread and its links to folk music, the land, its people and history. That you can articulate this, and draw the line between genres so vivdly (V-Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is a lifelong favourite) means that in some strange way it has helped me make sense of myself! To discern some of the same spirit that has definitely driven me to express myself in music, and continues to. Thanks for the time you took, and for putting it all so well.
