Ensemble Economique’s new album Melt Into Nothing is the prolific Humboldt County musician Brian Pyle’s most lucid séance to date, stripping layers off his trademark haze but retaining that sense of beautiful desolation that’s earned him a dedicated following. Combining whispered, threadbare lyrics with ornate trellises of guitar, it finds the former Starving Weirdo blurring the lines between apocryphal world music, dusty soundtracks and gauzy 4AD-style atmospherics.
