"Humble Mi"
from 9
Born in Falmouth, Jamaica, country girl Janine Cunningham moved to Kingston in 1991 when she was nine. Growing up amid the Jamaican capital’s “chaos disguised as order”, her artist alias Jah9 emerged from the city’s crucible of poetry, dub and spirit as a poet charged with a powerful feminine energy that by turns feeds into and is fired up by the island’s universal consciousness movement. Inspired by 1970s instrumental dub, Jah9 summons her voice from a soul older than the human vessel presently carrying it. Her philosophy, she says, is profoundly spiritual, and her style is jazz on dub.
