Jérémy Labelle was born in Rennes, France, to a father from the Indian Ocean island of La Réunion, and a Metropolitan French mother. Through his family roots, Labelle discovered the politicised music of maloya, which dates back to the days of French colonisation and slavery. While training as a mixer, he began making parallels between Underground Resistance and issues raised by Réunionnais musicians. He has since moved to La Réunion. Recorded on a four date tour of the island, his third live album Orchestre Univers is released this month.
