“Getting acquainted with Phew's art was one of the best parts of entering into the Disciples world,” says Pat Cain of experimental hip hop duo Model Home, speaking about his label mate. “It really felt to me that our worlds were aligned.” Washington DC based Model Home are the latest act to collaborate with the Japanese post-punk electronic artist, who is interviewed at length in The Wire 460.
“I reached out to Phew to see if they would be open to collaboration,” Cain continues. “To find one day, unannounced, an email with an amazing track was such an honour and honestly a big surprise. We set about using the material as we have with other collaborators, as a springboard for an improvisation. It was very natural to take their sound and manipulate it through tape effects, changing the fidelity a bit and stretching it out and adding our own layers as a live take. We played along in real time to the dubbed tape of Phew's tracks capturing our sound onto another tape and then transferring that tape into the final track. Pure ferrite magic.”
The resulting track “Naked Intentions” is featured on Saturn In The Basement – Model Home's latest mixtape, which sees rapper NappyNappa experimenting with freeform flows over creative accomplice Cain's abstracted beats and synth lines.
Much like Emily Pothast in her interview with Phew, the duo comment on the way the artist uses space in her productions: “Dis track with Phew es a nebulous warp'ng orb of sound sway'ng thru da planes of erry dimension,” says NappyNappa, “feels as ef space ets self was yah dance partner.”
Saturn In The Basement is released by Disciples 20 May and is available to pre-order now.
