First listen: The MIYUMI Project

October 2020

The longrunning Chicago based ensemble share a track from a forthcoming compilation of previously unreleased material

The MIYUMI Project celebrate 20 years of activity this year with a compilation of tracks from their discography and unreleased archives. Led by bassist Tatsu Aoki, the ensemble combine Japanese taiko drumming tradition with jazz improvisation performed by a shifting line-up of Chicago based musicians.

“And Then They Came For Us” is the title track of The MIYUMI Project's 2017 album, which, says FPE, the Illinois label behind the new compilation, “was a commissioned soundtrack for which Aoki created a soundscape dedicated to the incarceration of over 100,000 Americans of Japanese descent during World War Two”. The recording features violin player Jonathan Chen, Ed Wilkerson on clarinet, guitarist Rami Atass, percussionist Kioto Aoki and Miyumi Aoki playing bamboo flute.

The Best Of The MIYUMI Project features nine tracks in total and will be released in digital and vinyl formats on 20 November. It is available to pre-order now.
