Hanna Hartman shares excerpts from several radio commissions

November 2019

The Berlin based Swedish electroacoustician selects three examples of work from her expansive back catalogue

“In my latest pieces I am combining acoustic and electronic sounds – although it’s not always clear which sound is instrumental and which is something else.” So says Hanna Hartman, beginning a detailed description of her processes in an interview with Philip Clark in The Wire 429. The composer often works to special radio commissions and draws from her own vast archive of sounds, which she has built over a period stretching thirty years. These three excerpts are taken from relatively recent works, all featured on a CD released by Firework Edition in 2019. Further details of each commission below:

“Black Bat” was composed for the speaker system of Berlin's famous nightclub, Berghain. It was commissioned by Deutschlandradio Kultur & Sclossmediale Werdenberg and premiered as part of the Art's Birthday and Ultraschall Festival in Berlin 2014. It was released as a 10" vinyl by Komplott in 2016.

“Crush” was originally commissioned by Sveriges Radio and premiered in January 2018.

“Fracture” was commissioned by Deutschlandradio Kultur and premiered in October 2016. It features Dafne Vicente-Sandoval on bassoon.
