“Stay on it!” declares Philadelphia based author Alex Smith in the liner notes for Irreversible Entanglements new album. “This is the future! This is the spectral dreaming, the reshaped soundwaves of post-Katrina, post-Osage Avenue, post-Obamacare that we borrow from to do this work, so stay on it.”
The soul, noise, jazz and cyberpunk influenced band follow their maximalist self-titled debut with the more meditative Who Sent You?, which Smith calls a “focused and patient ritual”. Members Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), Keir Neuringer, Aquiles Navarro, Luke Stewart and Tcheser Holmes first performed as two separate ensembles at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event in 2015. After realising they shared the same ethos and goals, the outfits united to form one collective for a studio date in Brooklyn. Irreversible Entanglements was the result.
Who Sent You? was recorded in Philadelphia in 2019 and will be co-released by International Anthem and Don Giovanni on 20 March.
