The Burkinabe griot and Belgian electronics duo share a live recording of a recent show in Margate
“I didn’t feel the risk because I trusted myself,” Kaito Winse tells Phil England in The Wire 469, describing how he felt about his move from his home in Burkina Faso to Brussels back in 2018. “Every year I would come and spend three months here and every year the path would deepen,” the Avalanche Kaito vocalist and multi-instrumentalist continues. “As a modern griot I feel I am accompanied by ancestors and I felt I had this mission to spread the good news.”
This live version of the Burkinabe-Belgian trio's track “Grandpere” was recorded at Margate's Where Else? during the band's first UK tour in January 2023, and pays direct respect to Winse's elders, inviting them back to the dance with trance-inducing rhythms provided by noise punk bandmates Benjamin Chaval and Nico Gitto.
Chaval reflected on this particular performance over email: “Where Else? in Margate is the kind of community place where it's very important for us to play; people with a mission, a counter power,” he says. “The audience was very diverse and especially multigenerational. In particular, we identified an elderly couple who contrasted so much with the rest of the audience. Joy! This kind of tour is essential to advance the repertoire. The free length of the sets allowed us to get some songs out of the straight-jacket imposed by the very limited duration of the festivals. An excellent field for experimentation and research.”

Avalanche Kaito will perform at End Of The Road festival in Dorset UK 31 August–3 September.
