Californian composer’s 1970s and 80s recordings to be released for first time

The New York label Unseen Worlds is releasing a set of archival treasures from US composer Carl Stone. Called Electronic Music From The Seventies And Eighties, it presents seven tracks, six previously unreleased, spanning his early experiments with the Buchla 200 analogue synth and his pioneering work with digital samples.

"Dong Il Jang", "Shibucho" and "Kuk Il Kwan" are all taken from the early 1980s and they showcase Stone’s work with samplers. "Shibucho" plays around with samples of The Temptations and other soul tracks, whereas "Dong Il Jang" cuts up vocal and percussion samples into juddering collages.

Electronic Music From The Seventies And Eighties will be released by Unseen Worlds in October. And Carl Stone is set to tour Europe in September.

Love Carl Stone's work, interesting stuff. I can't believe he's not going to make it to Preston (or the UK) on his upcoming EU tour!

terrible! really terrible!

Carl Stone — the guard of the avant-garde, definitely a west coaster; composer of pieces simultaneously discursive and progressive; the thinking man's (dare i say it?) intellectual \ i had the misfortune of being 'audio first' on the production crew of a 'Music from Japan' commission showcase at NYC's Asia Society in the mid'80s featuring a premiere of his most recent work utilizing an Apple II computer \ the (then quite costly) hard drive with pertinent routines and data was inadvertantly plugged into an auxiliary lighting circuit by an on-stage technician and 'fried' by variable voltage application during preproduction rehearsal staging \ after the wailing and hand-wringing subsided (and discussions w/David Behrman, event co-curator as well as fellow featured composer), Carl effectively patched together a semblance of his original intentions to the delight of all concerned and/or in attendance \ an early lesson in double-redundancy digital back-up requirements learnt 'the hard way' \

LOVE IT!
