Listen: Alif collaborators compilation

August 2015

Listen to a selection of tracks by musicians involved in the Alif collective

01
Malayeen
"Fifi"
Malayeen are Raed Yassine (keyboards and electronics), Charbel Haber (guitar) and Khaled Yassine (percussion). Taken from the trio's self titled album (released by Annihaya in 2013), the track was inspired by the work of Egyptian guitarist Omar Khorshid. The album was dedicated track by track to legendary belly dancers from across the Arab world.

02
DnB Project
"This Sphere Is Flat"
This is a live recording of the Beirut based improv trio DnB Project, comprising Liliane Chlela (guitar, keyboards and electronics), Fou'ad Afra (drums) and Bashar Farran (bass).

03
Maurice Louca
"Al-Mallahat"
Featuring Sam Shalabi on guitar. Taken from Louca’s second album Benhayyi Al-Baghbaghan (Nawa, 2014).

04
Khyam Allami
"Fold 1"

Taken from the collaborative album The Exquisite Corpse Game instigated by Kavus Torabi and released by Believers Roast in 2013. Hinting at his more studio based experimental future, Allami's contribution opens the album with a brooding tone, leading the way to 11 other original tracks from artists as diverse as William Blake and JG Thirlwell.

05
Tamer Abu Ghazaleh
"Takhabot"
Featuring Shadi El Hosseini on piano. Taken from Abu Ghazaleh's debut album Mir'ah (eka3, 2008), “Takhabot” is a track penned by Abu Ghazaleh that reflects the political and socio-economic chaos that the Arab world is witnessing increasingly day after day.

06
Alif
"Al-Khutba Al-Akhira (The Last Declamation)"
Taken from the group’s debut album Aynama-Rtama (Nawa, 2015). Using a poem by the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish that speaks of “the dead” whose spirits remain present in occupied lands, this percussion-led track hints at the darker and more potent side of Alif's efforts to try varying directions in their style and sound.

Listen to a track from Alif's forthcoming album Aynama-Rtama (Wherever It Falls) here, out on Nawa Recordings on 4 September.
