Edwin Pouncey reviews Kemper Norton's Loor in The Wire 368: "Self anointed slurtronic folkologist Kemper Norton’s music has been labelled mysterious, occult and uncanny, the last of these being his preferred description for the vivid sound miniatures he painstakingly assembles. Using such minimal instrumentation as a laptop, harmonium and Casio keyboard, together with various low budget recording equipment, Norton seems to have an extra sensory knack of creating something moving, eerie and somewhat chilling out of almost nothing."
Kemper Norton describes the selected tracks:
"Velan Dreath 3" is the next episode in a series of tracks inspired by the stories about Cornwall's most famous vengeful and furious ghost, the murderous John (or Jan) Tregeagle. One of the legends about attempting to bind his spirit consists of him using freezing water from Vellandreath Brook to successfully carry sand up a nearby carn. Tregeagle was thereafter forbidden to approach water and remains in constant struggle with the sand. His roars and howls are heard across the county during northerly winds.
"Helston Music Fair 1992" is the first in our ongoing series of doomed attempts to capture the feelings of drugged terror and youthful joy experienced at the now-forgotten music mini-festival, while channelling the spirit of the ancient Furry Dance. This theme reappears on the new album Loor in the track "Helston 91".
"Dorcus’ Tears" A recurring character in our work, Dorcus is the vengeful spirit of a betrayed woman who haunts the mines of the village of our youth, St Agnes. Searching for her has been a pastime of feckless youth there for generations.
Loor (and a bonus disc of earlier work, Salvaged) is out on Front & Follow

The DIY aspect of Kemper Norton's performamnces make a delightful change from watching the top of a head ducking behind a laptop: which is too often all you get for your money with some high profile artists.
