Listen: Mette Rasmussen & Chris Corsano track

December 2014

Listen to a track from a forthcoming collaborative album between the saxophonist and drummer

Daniel Spicer speaks with Rasmussen in The Wire 371: "After an intense few years of non-stop touring and collaborating, Rasmussen breaking through with a handful of vital recorded projects. In 2014, the Manchester-based Efpi label released the self-titled debut album from Trio Riot, in which the Danish alto saxophonist is joined by English tenor saxophonist Sam Andreae and Swiss drummer David Meier. The trio – who first met while studying music in Helsinki in 2009 – blow fresh inspiration into the tired idea of punk jazz, with a brittle, spiky sound and a volatile mix of rigid riffs, fierce free jazz firebursts and chilly textural exploration. It’s an approach that’s seen them forge links with outposts of the UK post-noise DIY community, such as the Singing Knives label and adventurous jazz promoters like Fusebox in Leeds. This aesthetic also hints at Rasmussen’s attraction to intense sonic environments – further proof of which is now being provided by new duos with drummer Chris Corsano and Antwerp based electronic musician and Ultra Eczema label boss Dennis Tyfus."

Mette Rasmussen and Chris Corsano’s album is released by Relative Pitch in 2015. Trio Riot’s Trio Riot is released by Efpi
