Universal Beings is the third album by Makaya McCraven. Released by Chicago imprint International Anthem, the double LP documents four free jazz sessions recorded with a DIY set-up in four different cities, New York, Chicago, London and Los Angeles, each featuring different configurations of collaborators, including Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Tomeka Reid, Anna Butterss, Jeff Parker and Dezron Douglas, among others.
The sessions were subsequently edited and arranged by McCraven. A statement via his label declares this way of recording hopes to defy “the simplifications of revisionism and regionalism while celebrating the sounds, settings and stories that define the provenance of his work”.
