Moor Mother shares a playlist ahead of presenting her own programme at Le Guess Who? 2018

September 2018

The Philadelphia based musician Camae Ayewa is curating a stage at this year's edition of the Utrecht festival

Every year Le Guess Who? festival invites a selection of artists to present their own roster of musicians. This year, alongside Devendra Banhart, Shabaka Hutchings and RVNG Intl, US noise musician Camae Ayewa aka Moor Mother has been invited to participate in its programming. Ayewa's programme includes Art Ensemble Of Chicago, RP Boo, GAIKA, Nicole Mitchell, Emel Mathlouthi, Pan Daijing, Islam Chipsy & EEK, Maria Chavez, Eartheater, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, 700 Bliss and more. In her own words: “Musicians being free, breaking their own pressure points or so-called limitations and just being authentic. That was the thread that I wanted to have running through the curation. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago is like the encyclopaedia of African-American classical music and free jazz. They’re one of the wonders of the world. I had a chance to listen to [Nicole Mitchell's] most recent album, and I couldn’t even deal with myself listening to it. I was so bombarded with inspiration and different thoughts that I had to turn it down. That record is straight food, and I can’t even believe that something like that could be released in the past few years.”

This playlist serves as an introduction to Moor Mother’s curatorial strand of the festival, which runs from 8–10 November 2018
