Following the release of her collective Mourning [A] BLKstar's latest album The Cycle, vocalist LaToya Kent builds on her back catalogue of over 20 solo and collaborative releases with her latest album Nothing. The album features production from fellow M[A]B member RA Washington, with whom Kent also runs the DIY label Cleveland Tapes. Here Kent shares two tracks from Nothing, and explains the concepts behind them.
““Hue Man” is a nod to being human on a planet where we move about as if we aren’t each a full on miracle”, says the songwriter. “When we take a moment and really notice the workings of the body with its bone and skin, mind and emotion, it is magical. The universe is a sacred union of all within itself.
About “So Here We Are”, Kent says: “Pleading, not begging. Voicing for observance. Even after the relating is shifting there is that moment of “are you really gonna walk away from me?” Loving someone outside of ourselves is a created ecosystem of tandem. How do you thrive in the environment of me and I, you? The voice cracking and the warmth of tears and moist armpits and letting go even when you want to be asked to stay.”
Nothing is released by (iN) Sect on 20 November. Read The Wire's Mourning [A] BLKstar cover story in issue 430.
