Listen to two tracks featuring the late Bow Gamelan percussionist, instrument builder and noisemaker Paul Burwell
Listen to two tracks featuring the late Bow Gamelan percussionist, instrument builder and noisemaker Paul Burwell (1949-2007) as chosen by his fellow musician and friend Jez Riley.
Riley adds, "I could never quite plunge headlong into the full social torrent that Paul oversaw at his 'Boathouse' here in Hull. Events there always straddled the thin line between creative experience and all out chaos. As a member of the audience they were unforgettable nights - full of performance, sound, film, peotry and fire (actual flames and artistic blazes).
"My favourite time playing with Paul is included here as an MP3 - it's myself [Riley] on cello & Paul on trumpet & drums. By the time this was recorded most folks here in Hull thought that Paul was simply an all-out scatter shot drummer. However, without any idea that I was going to play very quietly Paul responded with some restrained, but still very much 'Paul', playing."
