Pianist Lisa Ullén shares four unreleased recordings

May 2018

The South Korean, Stockholm based improvisor and composer rediscovers some outtakes from her first solo piano album

Lisa Ullén has had a prolific collaborative career over the last decade, releasing albums with bassist Nina De Heney, cellist Okkyung Lee, vocalist Mariam Wallentin, and with the group Anna Högberg Attack. These four performances were recorded at the same time as those featured on the 2011 debut solo album Catachresis. Ullén has recently self-released her second solo piece Piano Works, via her Disorder imprint.

“Here I'm exploring different combinations and modes of playing through different extended techniques on the piano,” the composer explains. “My interest is in the relation between harmonic layers and melodic lines, and in how I can move from harmony to melody by focusing on a small details and sounds.”

Piano Works was reviewed by Daniel Spicer in The Wire 411. Subscribers can access Soundcheck via the online archive
