The Wire 440 cover stars share a track from their forthcoming album Swirling
This month, Sun Ra Arkestra will release their first album in over 20 years. The Philadelphia based ensemble has continued to perform, tour and write since the passing of founder Sonny Blount in 1993, and Swirling showcases the group's current sound after many years of further sonic explorations under the guidance of their current leader, saxophonist Marshall Allen. Listen to an exclusive stream of their latest track “Queer Notions” above.
Speaking to writer John Morrison in The Wire 440, alto saxophonist and longtime Arkestra member Knoel Scott says, “Swirling really is a testimony to Marshall Allen as Sun Ra’s finest disciple. He has not only kept the band together but has also put his own stamp on Sun Ra’s music. The album coming up is The Arkestra’s offer of love to the world in this turbulent time. Sound music for sound minds and sound bodies, a better music for a better world.”
