“I’d never heard Jiha’s music before and Jiha hadn’t read any of my work before, so it was like a blind date” says Roy Claire Potter, speaking about the radio session that resulted in the upcoming album To Call Out Into The Night, compiled and released by Takuroku. UK writer and performer Potter and Korean multi-instrumentalist Park Jiha hadn't met until the day they came together to record for BBC's Late Junction series in 2020.
During the freeform performance Potter reads passages of text, with Park responding as if the words were instrumentation, improvising on the piri, yanggeum and saenghwang. “I didn’t understand well”, says Park, “so that time I thought of the reading as just like sound for me.” The pair have since continued to collaborate and recently performed together at Glasgow Counterflows and Cafe Oto.
To Call Out Into The Night is released by Takuroku on 27 May and is available to pre-order.
