75 Dollar Bill – aka guitarist Che Chen and percussionist Rick Brown – will release their fifth album I Was Real on 28 June. According to The Wire's Dave Mandl in his interview with the duo in issue 424, the record sees Chen and Brown continuing their signature style of “long pieces that emphasise drones (but always with a beat), non-Western modes, overtones and harmonics, and seemingly infinite repetition”. The interview also reveals that the recording of I Was Real was a more collaborative effort than previous releases such as 2016's Wood/Metal/Plastic Pattern/Rhythm/Rock. For instance, in addition to Brown playing plywood crate and Chen on 12 string electric guitar, the title track includes guest appearances from Sue Garner on electric bass, Andrew Lafkas on contrabass and Karen Waltuch on amplified viola.
I Was Real is released by tak:til/Thin Wrist on 28 June. Subscribers can access the full interview with 75 Dollar Bill via the online archive.
