Park Jiha has been devoted to exploring the possibilities of traditional Korean instruments since she began her studies at the specialist Guk-ak school in Seoul at a young age. Following this early decision, Park went on to major in the piri – a double reed instrument made from bamboo – at university and later formed the experimental folk group Sum in 2007. Communion, Park's debut solo album, sees the composer and producer playing piri, saenghwang and yanggeum alongside Kim Oki's tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, John Bell's vibraphone and Kang Tekhyun's percussion.
Originally released in Korea in 2016, Communion will be released worldwide by tak:til, sub label of German imprint Glitterbeat, on 2 March 2018.
