Artist Rie Nakajima and Cafe Oto co-founder Keiko Yamamoto have performed together as O YAMA O since 2014, but their new self-titled LP is their debut release. Recorded together in a studio setting, Nakajima extends her practice of building kinetic sound pieces from small and found objects, while Yamamoto adds improvised vocals and sounds created by body movement.
According to the label “O YAMA O explores a certain domestic and democratic quality of everyday life, born through associations to folk music of Japan and a folding of myth, tradition, and routine; the non-spectacular and the sublime.”
O YAMA O is released by Mana on 5 October. Rie Nakajima was interviewed in The Wire 371. Subscribers can access the full article via the online archive.
