Listen to new releases by Nicola Ratti and Rafael Toral

New albums on the Australian label run by composer Lawrence English

Brisbane based label Room 40 has released new material from Italian sound designer Nicola Ratti and Portuguese musician and performer Rafael Toral.

Following his last album Pressure Loss, Milan based Ratti has compiled a selection of experimental works on a release titled The Collection, while Toral's album Moon Field houses three extended works written for his performance group Space Collective 3. “While working on it, the piece revealed a strange hovering quality, a kind of stasis” says Toral. “It's alive and awake, like all the recent Space Program music, but doesn't seem to want to go anywhere. The music wanted to be something very peculiar and I changed it a lot in response to that. It also revealed a kind of nocturnal mood, as if we were listening to alien signals with satellites crossing the sky under the moonlight.”

Nicola Ratti is featured in an article on the electronic music of Milan in The Wire 391. Rafael Toral was interviewed in issue 272. Subscribers can access those via the online archive.

Moon Field was released on 29 September and The Collection will be available from 6 October 2017, both via Room40.
