Titled Flowers From The Ashes: Contemporary Italian Electronic Music, this new compilation from the Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint features ten tracks by Italian born producers and musicians such as Silvia Kastel, Caterina Barbieri and Lory D. Many of the artists included are now based outside of their home country, and the label itself has operated out of Berlin since 2009 – but its founder Luca Mortellaro says a shared “cultural memory” unifies the sounds of this collection.
Mortellaro, who produces and DJs under his Lucy pseudonym, says he was inspired to put together this showcase of new music on a recent trip home to Sicily. “The idea came when I was hiking across the volcanic landscape of Etna,” he explains. “Before me I was observing my companions with great difficulty making their way through that harsh terrain as we were crossing a valley purely made of ashes. That scene stuck in me as a representation of the socio-cultural free fall of my country and of the opposite artistic rebound force happening.”
