The latest instalment of The Wire's Unlimited Editions column, featured in issue 432, focusses on the Los Angeles based label Recital. Founded in 2011 by musician Sean McCann, the imprint has released experiments in opera, folk, blues, classical, and more. Here McCann selects music from a wide range of past releases for this exclusive playlist.
“In choosing this audio selection for The Wire,”, says McCann, “I leaned a bit more towards the beauty side of Recital, as those are a bit more pleasurable to listen to on your computer as you sift through the internet in the morning with a cup of coffee. Karla Borecky, Loren Connors, Alex Twomey, etc. Shaded, heart-aching melodies and so on. Though, to share a fair and true piece of Recital pie, I included some sound art/poetry works from forthcoming 2020 albums by Adriano Spatola & Charlie Morrow, Additionally chosen is a clip of the coming double CD by Fluxus artist Eric Andersen, which combines a recording of a professional mourner crying over tragic classical music. That same juxtaposition may just be the clearest way to describe Recital’s character too.”
