Wire mix: Eleni Poulou

May 2023

The former Fall vocalist and keyboard player presents Connect The Un Polka Dots; a 90 minute mix featuring tracks from many of her own recent projects and more

In The Wire 472, as part of a 20 page special series of features on various aspects of The Fall, Kek-W spoke with keyboardist Eleni Poulou about her Korg MS-20 (which she still uses regularly in Nohe Noshe, her longterm sound art project with Croatian artist Petr Kišur) and experimental collaging at home with Mark E Smith, along with other art, writing and music activities generated by her ongoing desire to collaborate.

Poulou also regularly appears on radio, presenting slots on Berlin's Cashmere Radio and Athens station Movement. In this mix – titled Connect The Un Polka Dots – Poulou weaves tracks from her own meditative Organza Ray unit with techno, hiphop, spoken word and more.

gone off 'mix tapes' these days
but this is swell
the bomb sniffing dogs thing 'pills thrills', Eleni did was
particularly profound prefer this to house of all lot at the mo.

realize how much an impression she made on the fall's modern sound
could have been a new fall album track in fact.

good luck to her.

A book written by Eleni Poulou would be pretty interesting considering that she was a key element of The Fall for the last 15 or 16 years for musical and extra-musical reasons.

I quote this extract from an interview with Mouse On Mars just after Mark's disappearance:

"The stupid thing is that we don't know what to say now. But what's really important to us is telling how important Ellie was. For this whole case thing, for Mark, for Von Südenfed. Ellie was somehow a magician who really managed things well and let Mark in and at the same time gave him a push so that things continued for him."

I wish her the best.
