Wire playlist: Dialect

As the Liverpudlian producer Andrew PM Hunt releases his fourth album as Dialect, he shares a playlist of tracks spanning his various projects, explaining what defines each one

Over the past five years, UK producer Andrew PM Hunt has been involved in three main musical projects. “These different projects have all emerged from long standing friendships”, says Hunt, “and feature people I live with in a large house-share in Liverpool (there are 14 of us). They’ve all got a slightly different sound from each other owing to the musical personalities and techniques involved but they all share a similar centre of gravity, with a fragmented sense of melody at their core.”

Here, Hunt describes the conception and concepts behind each of the aliases he produces under, and compiles a playlist of tracks spanning the projects.

Dialect has been my solo project since 2015. It started as a way to find a home for a bunch of disparate recordings I had knocking around that felt like they didn’t fit anywhere else. I had a sort of revelation when I realised that I could turn them into an album by treating the material as if I was making a mix of other people’s music – different styles and approaches being collaged together with unexpected connections and big emphasis on the ~flow~ Since then it’s taken on a life of its own and has become my main project and a space for me to fuse my compositional tendencies with various non-musical concepts like ecology and geography. It’s mostly been a solitary musical endeavour but my new record Under~Between features multiple collaborators and performers.

Raft of Trash is a collaborative MIDI project between myself, JC Leisure and designer Thom Isom inspired by the natural rhythms of the environment and the sounds of systems. Using the videogame Simcity 3000, we extract MIDI data from the changing environmental sound design which is then used to control our own synths and samplers. We react musically to these semi generative forms with live guitar and sometimes vocals to create music somewhere between ambient and free improv. All of our recordings are made live with no overdubs, which I guess is a key difference from my other projects which are more compositional. We’ve released two EPs and one full length album Likeness On The Edge Of Town.

Land Trance is a duo with Ben from Ex-Easter Island Head (a group I also play in). We started recording together back in 2018 and have slowly developed a shared language based on a combination of Ben’s background in process music and my approach to electroacoustic collage. We use a lot of obsolete playback technology in our improvisations, like dictaphones and tape machines as well as our voices and then slowly shape arrangements over late night studio sessions. We released our album First Séance last year on Forest Swords’ label Dense Truth, and have since taken on a number of further collaborations which will hopefully see the light of day later this year. First Séance is also just about to be reissued on vinyl.
