Wire Playlist: NAAFI

May 2019

Label manager Tomás Davó selects 20 tracks showcasing the sound of his Mexican electronic music community

In January 2017, The Wire's Robert Barry reported on a new wave of DIY record label collectives challenging the notion that limited funds were forcing “labels and grant-givers alike towards ever greater conservatism”. Along with other community driven organisations such as NON, 22a, and Los Angeles Free Music Society, the Mexico City/Puerto Escondido based label NAAFI pursued this idea, giving independent Mexican artists a platform while continuously expanding its music family since its first release in 2012.

On 25 May NAAFI will present a five hour showcase at Mexico City's Selina International Music Summit. Curated by the expanded electronic music troupe, it will feature appearances from Monterrey based ZutZut, core NAAFI member Wasted Fates, Tayhana, and others. Here, label co-founder Tomás Davó has put together a playlist of NAAFI tracks heavily featured in in the label’s DJ sets.
