“I wanted to see what happens when you bring 20 musicians together,” musician and disability advocate Robyn Steward announces at an edition of her London Cafe Oto based inclusive gig series Robyn's Rocket, as described by Clive Bell in The Wire 484. “Some who have learning disabilities, some autistic people, and some jazz and experimental musicians from Cafe Oto and Total Refreshment Centre. And a dog.”
Robyn's Rocket has long been a vehicle for Steward's commitments to collaboration, improvisation and inclusivity, with performances from fellow travellers such as Charles Hayward, Prangers, Maggie Nicols, Alabaster DePlume, Kathy Hulme and many more having being programmed over the years. As well as frequently facilitating live sound, Steward also regularly releases her own music under her Robyn Rocket alias in the form of digital DIY EPs and singles. There are currently five Robyn Rocket releases planned for this year, including the forthcoming Love EP, recorded in collaboration with People You May Of Heard Of.
In this playlist, Steward selects tracks from her discography dating as far back as 2007, and provides some insight into the inspiration and circumstances surrounding each track with audio introductions.
