Alan Tomlinson died on 13 February aged 76. As a tribute to the UK trombonist and improvisor we have made Mike Barnes's 2018 interview from The Wire 413 free to read in our online library.

Alan will be be much-missed, both for his formidable technique and also as a lovely man. For those who need more persuading of the former, there’s a terrific vinyl LP on Bead - long overdue for CD reissue - ”Still Outside”**; and Scatter have just put out three digital-only archival releases, assembled by the ever-splendid Tim Fletcher.
** two of its tracks are named after British trains (one Lancastrian, like Alan) - train-spotting being an enthusiasm of his.
