The Shining Path To The Star Gates, Part I – MSTRMND
The Shining Path To The Star Gates
Procrastination can be an energy-building device, increasing the
suspense power of a deadline with seemingly mindless distractions
and wanderings but eventually a pattern emerges, and the eureka
moment provides a guiding light into completion of the delayed
project. Over the course of working on Excepter, I have alternated
editing records with an enthusiasm for other non-linear narratives,
my own mix of Modernist writing, comic books, occult reference
tomes, video-games and especially, whatever science fiction flick
happens to be on cable. Last year, a chance viewing of Stanley
Kubrick's The Shining would lead me into the weird world
of online film analysis, conspiracy, and mysticism.
Part I: MSTRMND
An cursory online search for information on The Shining
led me to the 'visual language research' log of the self-styled
MSTRMND who in shot-by-shot analysis presents the film as a
symbolic 'super-glyph' reflecting the conflict of the aeons between
the Meso-American and Anglo-European forces. Slow, methodical and
hard-to-read as Kubrick himself, the MSTRMND posted his 'Excerpts'
serially. While waiting for updates I found myself searching for
other analyses and conjectures on the film's dense web of hidden
meanings.

Part II: Collative Learning
Which led me to the website of Rob Ager, who presents an epic
catalog of The Shining myths and mysteries, which like
another Internet bombshell Zeitgeist: The Movie, connects
solar symbology to a vast 'Illuminati' conspiracy. I sought out
proofs of the various impossible rooms, teleporting doors and
moving furniture hidden throughout The Shining. I watched
the film over and over again, mapping out on graph paper all the
sets shown in the film. I made calculations of the times, dates and
days of the week shown in the film, looking for patterns.

Part III: Wrong Way Wizard
I came to some conclusions connecting Kubrick to magic and
space/time travel so it made sense that I would meet a 'Wizard' on
Ager's moderated forum. The so-called Wrong Way Wizard maintains a
blog devoted to occult/Gnostic /Qabbalistic readings of Kubrick and
the Coen Bros films. We began swapping ideas and word-play back and
forth before the WWWiz would be banned from the Ager forum for
breaching the taboo topic of '9/11'.

Part IV: Jake Kotze
The WWWiz wasn't the only one connecting the Kubrick Monolith to
the Twin Towers disaster. A South African-Canadian by the name of
Jake Kotze had been weaving tales of what he calls the '9/11 Star
Gate Mega-Ritual' in YouTube videos and various blogs, creating,
along with his band of 'Merry Men' an entire syncretic cosmology
dubbed 'Synchromysticism.' Hollywood starlet-worship collides with
the Egyptian mystery schools; the media-language of advertising
with Classical gods and heroes, everything leads through the 'Star
Gate' of 'cosmic illumination'.

Part V: The Synchromystics
In contrast with the paranoid world of Illuminati-tracking
2012-type conspiracy theorists, Synchromysticism is relentlessly
positive and optimistic. In fact, my old pal the Wrong Way Wizard
would gain admission to their ranks only to be banned once again
for his distinctly doomy viewpoints. Perhaps a sign that I too
should get off the Net and back to work! More later...
