"This website hosts historic recordings to do with underwater sound. Highlights include excerpts from expendable radio sonobuoy training records (78 RPM recordings of underwater sounds, to be used in training U.S. submariners to listen for environmental, organic, and military sounds) as well as a 1965 recording of Commander Scott Carpenter of Sealab II leading his crew in a version of “Goodnight Irene.” To prevent oxygen poisoning, helium has been added to the mix, causing divers’ voices to rise, making them sound like the 1950s novelty act Alvin and the Chipmunks."
