The debut album from Brooklyn based Devi Mambouka's Masma Dream World project draws on her practice as an artist and reiki practioner, exploring approaches to trance and inner awakening.
Play At Night encompasses vocal and electronics experimentation, as well as elements related to butoh (a Japanese performance art, in which Mambouka is trained) and the theta frequency (which creates a trance state in the mind). Born in Gabon, Africa to a father of the Bahoumbou tribe and a Singaporean mother, Mambouka has also incorporated recordings taken whilst visiting those countries. Her work is also informed by her experiences of growing up in the Bronx and embarking on a DJ career at such an age that she was required to use a fake ID.
Play At Night is released by Northern Spy on 25 September
