Stream In Memory by the Brooklyn future soul ensemble
The Brooklyn based US group Space Captain join Atlanta's Waking Astronomer and Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote in blending the sampleadelic innovations of J Dilla and the Soulquarians posse with sprawling psychedelic rock. Across the EP's five tracks, skittering, off-kilter beats collide with oceanic synthwork and vocals that recall Erykah Badu and Broadcast's Trish Keenan.
Signed last year to Brighton based label Tru Thoughts (J-Felix, Dizz1, Flowdan), Space Captain are comprised of founder members Maralisa Simmons-Cook (vocals and lyrics) and Alex Pyle (bass and production), alongside Gray Hall (guitar, production), Mike Haldeman (guitar), Joey Ziegler (drums), Joy Morales (keyboard) and Lessie Vonner (trumpet).
According to Simmons-Cook, the song "Cosmos" was inspired by the sudden loss of a family member. “While my family struggled with this tragedy," she explains, "I was processing my own emotions through song, picking up on my immense sadness yet inability to break down.”
Reviewing In Memory in The Wire 385, Michael Gonzales describes the group as "a more mellow Bomb Squad, unafraid of mixing clamour and calm, noise and harmony".
Space Captain’s In Memory is released by Tru Thoughts on 26 February.
