Explain The Food, Bitte is the third album by Amsterdam based DJ and producer Marcelle Van Hoof aka DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess. Marcelle has been DJing for almost two decades, is known for her experimental punk, dub, techno (and more) vinyl-only three-deck sets, and has been named a lifelong resident at Uganda's Nyege Nyege festival.
“I grew up with music which was about the outsider” says Marcelle in an interview with Chal Ravens in The Wire 436, “about feeling lonely, so music was for me a way of survival. I take it very seriously.” Here, Marcelle talks us through three tracks from her forthcoming release.
“Arthritis I”
The oldest song (1.5 years) on the album. I always press up dubplates of my new songs in order to play them live and this turned out to be a dancefloor favourite. The steelpan sound is played on a broken children's keyboard I found in the rubbish in front of our house. It only sporadically worked so I had to play it fast and hard. So hard in fact that my partner told me I would develop arthritis because of the heavy slammings on the keyboard. I made various versions of this song, including many dubs. Here's a video from London, February 2020 where I played one of the dubs.
“Hum Hum Hum”
One of the quickest made songs on the LP. Was ready in a few hours. Title comes from a sample from Dutch 'court TV' where a woman was complaining about a hum in her house. Love the rhythm, speed and urgency of the track. Absolutely adore the moment quite late in the track when a techno beat comes and goes – maybe it comes too late and goes too quickly but it's always good to play with the expectations of the the listener!
