Resetting The Rhythm

March 2020

Hear tracks by artists featured in The Wire's recent report on a new wave of experimentation coming from contemporary drummers

“New dimensions in sound and texture are being cracked open by percussionists harnessing the power of installations, studio technology and crate digging.” So begins Resetting The Rhythm, contributor Joshua Minsoo Kim’s multi-artist feature published in The Wire 433, in which he interviews four drummers who are pushing the boundaries of expectation around their instrument. His interviewees – Eli Keszler, Tim Barnes, Will Guthrie and Claire Rousay – “are bound together by an insatiable craving for moving beyond in their practice, whatever that may entail, even while their goals, musical influences and actual output may vary widely”. This playlist gives examples of their work, along with tracks by other drummers on a similar mission: Samuel Goff, Tyshawn Sorey and Paul Abbott.
