Unedited recordings of Sheng Jie

May 2020

Beijing based cellist and visual artist sends through excerpts from rehearsals and live shows

Maybe Noise collective member Sheng Jie – who also uses the moniker Gogoj for audiovisual performances – recently released her first solo LP, Oviparity. “Composed with an electric cello and some effects,” writes Josh Feola in The Wire 435, “the album moves elegantly from delicate plucked melodies to harsh, bowed walls of noise, elegiac drones, and densely looped and layered chords.”

This selection of personal home and live audio recordings, sent by Jie, demonstrates her everyday practice and how she transforms her music in front of an audience.

Read more about the artist, her influences and her work towards maintaining a live music scene in Beijing in The Wire 435 or via The Wire's online archive. Oviparity is available now via Maybe Noise and WV Sorcerer Productions.
