March 2020

Foursome regroup to release their first album in almost 20 years

Chicago Underground was first conceived in 1997 and since then this mobile jazz unit has used many line-ups of different sizes. Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor have used the name to release as a duo, as well as in various formations with interchanging members including Jeff Parker, Noel Kupersmith, Sara Smith, and now Josh Johnson.

Good Days is the first release in 19 years for the Chicago Underground Quartet, who released their self-titled debut album via Thrill Jockey in 2001. On Good Days, Josh Johnson plays synth bass, organ and piano, Rob Mazurek piccolo trumpet, electronics and bells, Jeff Parker electric guitar and Chad Taylor features on drums and percussion.

“We all grew musically and everyone was super active in their own things,” says Mazurek. “It didn’t feel like any time had passed. The only thing different is that maybe everyone’s concept of making music is stronger after 20 years, but still similar, at least for this thing. I’ve ventured into some real crazy shit, but I love playing melodies and doing song structures as much as making the noisiest non-structured thing ever.”

Good Days is released by Astral Spirits on 27 March
